Amani Lewis: Reimagining CareALMA|LEWIS
Amani Lewis: Reimagining Care is a series of magnificent, capacious works on paper and an expensive wall installation. During the multiple pandemics, Amani documented their family through video and audio recordings, and mined various family photo albums as source material. They attentively combine storytelling, the spiritual, and family imagery into new visual forms that honor and celebrate the multiplicity and complexities of Black life. Using portraiture as a mode to create a deeper connection to their familial heritage, Amani’s work reveals the beauty, love, and abundance of Blackness.
Amani Lewis (b. 1994) is a Miami and Baltimore-based artist whose dynamic, mixed-media paintings foreground their subject’s humanity, agency, and inner resilience. Their creative process incorporates photography, digital collage, screen-printing, and luminous textures into kaleidoscopic, large-scale portraits. Using expansive patterns of pulsating colors, Lewis recognizes the power and beauty in every individual’s story, cumulatively raising their voice for Black and queer communities at large.
